Executive Functioning Strategies

What do Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and our students have in common?
Executive Functioning Skills.

What do Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and our students have in common?  The answer lies in executive functioning skills, such as organization, time management, emotional regulation and working memory.  These skills are often the last to be internalized but the first to be required of 21st century learners.  Executive functioning strategies appear invisible to many learning disabled children.  By making the invisible visible, we can equip students with specific skills for success.
Laura Doto is a Professional Educational Therapist.  She holds a masters degree from the University of Chicago and is Executive Director of Loren Academic Services in Winnetka, providing curriculum design, academic support and educational therapy services to clients ranging from elementary school to professional graduate programs.  After serving as the Director of Academic Support for students at Montclair Kimberley Academy (MKA) in New Jersey, Laura recently returned to the Chicago area to practice.

Week 33 - Rules

The 4th grade classes are reading the book Rules, by Cynthia Lord.  It is about a family living with the effects of Autism.

What is Autism?
read in past post

What is a communication book?
A book full of pictures and symbols where people with Autism can use them to build sentences in order to  communicate with others instead of using words.  The can be made or purchased by a professional trained in how to build them.

What is an OT?
An OT is an occupational therapist.  Occupational therapists help students with Autism because they are experts in the study of human growth and development. They study the  social, emotional, and physiological effects of illness and injury. This knowledge helps them promote skills for independent living in people with autism.  They help set specific goals for the person with autism. These goals often involve social interaction, behavior, and classroom performance.

Week 33: Autism Awareness

This Monday, April 30, we will dress in all blue!  Are you aware of how Autism Spectrum Disorder is present in our every day lives?

What is autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?

Autism is a group of developmental brain disorders, collectively called autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The term "spectrum" refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment, or disability, that children with ASD can have. Some children are mildly impaired by their symptoms, but others are severely disabled.
ASD is diagnosed according to guidelines listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition - Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR).1 The manual currently defines five disorders, sometimes called pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs), as ASD:
  • Autistic disorder (classic autism)
  • Asperger's disorder (Asperger syndrome)
  • Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS)
  • Rett's disorder (Rett syndrome)
  • Childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD).

What are the symptoms of ASD?

What are some other conditions that children with ASD may have?

Week 21: Celebrate Learning and Black History Month

We recognize February as Black History Month by honoring an African-American who made a notable contribution to our society.  During February, a member of the student council will recite a statement to the student body each day that celebrates the accomplishments of someone who achieved something significant in American history.  Every year Black History Month has a new theme. The 2012 theme honors black women: Black Women in American Culture and History.
