Week 33 - Rules

The 4th grade classes are reading the book Rules, by Cynthia Lord.  It is about a family living with the effects of Autism.

What is Autism?
read in past post

What is a communication book?
A book full of pictures and symbols where people with Autism can use them to build sentences in order to  communicate with others instead of using words.  The can be made or purchased by a professional trained in how to build them.

What is an OT?
An OT is an occupational therapist.  Occupational therapists help students with Autism because they are experts in the study of human growth and development. They study the  social, emotional, and physiological effects of illness and injury. This knowledge helps them promote skills for independent living in people with autism.  They help set specific goals for the person with autism. These goals often involve social interaction, behavior, and classroom performance.
